President's Comments: August marked the final month for hot weather for this year, Yea!!!! And as expected, car shows and such are popping up as expected. In August we did manage to have one really nice event – the pool party at Seaby and Floy’s. We had about 35 folks in attendance to party down and have a good time. Also in August, 4 couples from the CCCC accompanied the Emerald Coast Corvette club on their annual trip to Helen GA – WOW, was it ever a GREAT time!! From the ‘spirited driving’ on the twisty north GA roads to the fantastic food, it was a good one. Thanks much to the Emerald Coast club for inviting us. In September we have several events to plan for. On the 11th, the Capitol City Corvettes are having their annual Car Show at the Shoppes at EastChase in Montgomery. Then on the 18th, Jeff and Cindy are having a ‘Dance Party’ at their Dothan Conference Center – this one sounds like FUN!! Then on the 25th, we will try to have a dinner cruise after making some charity donation stops. We do have a contract with the Marriott for next year’s Caravan. The dates will be 19-21 May 2011. If you plan on going out of town for Labor Day, drive safe and watch out for “Earl” (the hurricane). Bruce

Tech Tips: Is it important to change the brake fluid in your car once in a while – just ask the couple who lost their brakes while negotiating the twisty mountain roads in north GA. During the recent Helen GA trip with the Emerald Coast Corvette club, one of the Corvettes suffered brake failure due to boiling brake fluid. The car is a ’98 C5 and apparently has never had the fluid changed. As we were descending a fairly steep road they called out on the radios they had brake problems and couldn’t stop. Fortunately at the time we were all going fairly slow so by gearing down and using the emergency brake they got it stopped. After a few minutes of cooling, they regained brakes and were able to continue. How can you tell if the brake fluid needs changing – color. Brake fluid starts out as a perfectly clear fluid, and as it undergoes heating and cooling it picks up moisture which turns the fluid darker. When it is black it is pretty well saturated and will then will boil at a significantly lower temperature then when fresh. All that is needed is some hard braking to heat the brakes. The fluid will boil and become a compressible gas and not be able to apply any pressure to the brake pads, and therefore be unable to provide any braking force. How often should you change your fluid – well first of all its fairly difficult to replace 100% of the fluid in your brake system. This requires a pressure bleeder, a jack and jack stands or a lift, and a few pints of fluid. As an alterative, I recommend drawing out the fluid from the reservoir with a suction device such as a turkey baster and refilling it with a good Dot 3 or 4 fluid. Over a couple of weeks thru osmosis the fresh fluid will work its way into the entire brake system. This process must be repeated 2 or 3 times to get a majority of the fluid changed, waiting about a month between changes, and this is something anyone can do. I recommend changing the brake fluid at least every 5 years. Bruce |

Journeys: Webmaster and Jerri traveled sans 'Vette to Bar Harbor for a few days. Our "usual" trip shortened by a few days to return for business. See pics on facebook before too long, I'll keep them public for a while. |

Car(S) of the Month: Corvettes have been a part of our family for many years. I guess now that we have 4 means something, I don’t know, maybe just that I have always been an adrenaline junkie and a fast ride in a Vette is an instant cure. Also, maybe its because I have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up – a race car driver!! So that’s why we made the latest purchase, a pristine ’02 Z06 from Stan Kennedy. A C5 Z06 with the addition of an oil cooler, some ‘race’ brake pads, and high temperature lubricants makes an excellent track car. Back in December we bought a beautiful ’08 coupe from David Brown. This car is Jean’s primary driver and is our ‘trip’ car. As it has the LT3 package, adjustable magnetic shocks, Nav, both tops, and the dual mode exhaust, it makes an excellent travelling car. I was surprised at the power of the LS3 engine – this car is darn fast, and its still stock!! It performed great during the recent trip to Helen GA, and got an astounding 30 mpg on the trip up there. Then there is the ’01 Convertible. This is a car I have always dreamed of
owing, lots of power (about 550hp), great looks with the custom body panels
and paint, and even practical enough to drive every day. This car was
modified by 20th Century Muscle Cars in Dallas TX. Since they are an
authorized Lingenfelter dealer/installer, the car was treated to a
Lingenfelter short block after the previous owner blew the original engine.
The Magnacharger makes about 7pounds of boost and a 220/226/.580 lift cam
helps the power output as well. The latest mod done last month was a twin
disk clutch and aluminum flywheel that made a surprising improvement in
acceleration due to the big reduction in rotating weight/drag.
The last one is the Vette we call ‘baby’. We purchased this ’01 coupe new and it now has over 133k miles on it so yes, we have driven the heck out of it. It has been an absolutely amazing car. It has had so many close encounters with other cars, motorcycles, and even a deer, I sometimes think the car is possessed - by an angel!! It car has probably made 100 trips down the drag strip, and even has a road course event under its belt. The only major component I have replaced on this car is the differential as the original one started whining. I scored a used rear end from a guy on corvette forum for $300 and did the swap myself and so saved myself a couple of thousand bucks. Maintaining this fleet could be an issue, but fortunately I am able to do that including doing the computer tuning. When I was younger I made my living as a mechanic and since then have done it for fun so I have always had grease under my fingernails. I do offer custom computer tuning (power tuning) to club members as well as regular maintenance work since I have a lift. Having a lift in the garage is the best thing a ‘car guy’ can ever get - thanks Jean! Corvettes Forever!!! Bruce
